It’s finally here; football season. There is no way to adequately explain the impact this sport has on the American culture and no where is its impact sensed greater than in the South.
Pro, college, high school, middle school and rec leagues are making there debuts this weekend. Make no mistake, it is a fun sport to watch, play, or coach.
Many people organize their lives around the season. Plans for special events such as weddings and vacations are made with football schedules in mind.
Like many things American, football can be taken to extremes. Some extremes are destructive to people and property. Hateful words are used to describe the performance of the young men who just lost the game to the big rival. Near riots are not unusual as fans celebrating victory overturn cars and vandalize property as their often alcohol induced fervor turns them into a mob.
But football can be used for good. Football players and coaches who love Jesus can use their local, state, and national notoriety to lift up the name of Christ. Just this past season, the two Super bowl teams had head coaches who unabashedly proclaim Christ as their Savior, and give all credit for their accomplishments to Him.
A ministry that helps bring the gospel to the campuses across America is the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. FCA is one of the few remaining evangelical organizations that are ministering in government schools…high schools, colleges and universities…throughout our nation.
While their focus is not just football, as students begin their new school year this is the sport that is already in full swing with most teams working out together throughout the summer. It is the largest team sport in most schools as well, and due to the popularity of the sport, and the platform given to successful players and coaches, born again participants can impact a campus for Christ.
FCA has the vision to see the world impacted for Jesus Christ through the influence of athletes and coaches. Their mission is to present to athletes and coaches and all whom they influence the challenge and adventure of receiving Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord, serving Him in their relationships and in the fellowship of the church. Their values demonstrate steadfast commitment to Jesus Christ and His Word through Integrity, Serving, Teamwork and Excellence.
What can you do to support FCA? You can begin by praying for the FCA leaders – men and women who God is using to reach into high school, college, and university campuses across this nation to transform lives with the message of the gospel.
